I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to direct my fall ski racing camp at Copper for the past 30 years. We were one of the first camps to utilize Copper Mountain for early season training. The relationship we have built with Copper has been remarkable. It offers us first opportunity on all training lanes, time slots and housing. This creates optimal training for our camp athletes.
Copper Mountain offers the best training conditions in November and December in North America. Snow making is a major advantage for Copper. They begin their snowmaking in October and can make snow up to 12,000 feet. Training arenas are their first priority.
We understand that having fun in the training camp environment is an important component and we try very hard to provide this to the athletes along with world class training and first class USSA certified coaches with years of experience. Training, of course is our main objective. Athletes have the opportunity go off campus to the outlet stores, shopping at Vail and Breckenridge and to the movies.
Our condos are based in the Center Village and every condo tower is a gated community with video surveillance to assure safety. Coaches stay in the condos with the athletes; curfew is at 10:00 pm. Safety is our highest priority.

Camp Confirmation and Email Distribution list
When we receive your application, we confirm via email that we have received it and you are placed on a fall camp email distribution list that we use to keep you informed. This email is followed up with an acknowledgement letter. The letter includes contact information, what the athlete needs to do upon arrival, a list of items to bring to the camp and two forms that need to be filled out and mailed back to us (in the provided self addressed stamped envelope), one being a flight schedule / insurance form and a Copper Mountain release form.
Camp Arrival Upon arrival, you will meet Scott Winquist or a camp staff member at your baggage claim. You will then be moved up the mountain in one of our vans, or in a commercial bus. Once you arrive at Copper, you will be greeted by one of our coaching staff members and handed a packet. This packet contains your room assignment, condo location, room key, what country (ski / training group) you are in and a detailed time line of the next 24 hours. You will also be escorted to your condo. There will be a short camp assembly meeting at 8:00 pm for the athletes that have already arrived at the camp. The athletes that arrive later will be given the information for the next morning upon their arrival to Copper. Athletes that arrive during the day and early evening are on their own for dinner. We will direct them to restaurants next to our condos - they offer great discounts to us.
Unaccompanied Minors The airline your child flies on determines if they are an unaccompanied minor based on the athlete's age. Most drop this after age 15, but please check with your airline when the flight is booked, they will tell you if the athlete is a UM. If they are flying as a UM (and please, only if they are a UM) mark it on the section provided for you on the flight schedule of the acknowledgement letter. Unaccompanied minors will be picked up at their gate by Scott Winquist. Please make sure you pay the UM fee both ways.
The First Day Athletes will meet their groups and coaches at the designated time in the Village Square Conference Center centrally located to our condos. There will be four groups of 14; each group has a head coach and four assistant coaches. They will meet for an hour to go over the day, hand out lift tickets and get to know each other. Each country will then break down to four, or five athletes and one coach to free ski, work on balance, edging, etc. and familiarize themselves with the mountain. At 8:00, on the night of the the first day, we will have out first formal camp meeting, the entire camp staff will be introduced at this time.
Groups All of our ski groups / countries are assembled prior of camp with the information you provide on the application, along with the knowledge our coaching staff already has of the athletes. We also group them by age and ability (exceptions are made, of course). Saturday is a day of adjustment and fulfilling requests. Each country / group's schedules are laid out before camp begins. Each group will train, eat and meet together as a group.
Lane Training All training arenas are B netted top to bottom to assure safety. The lanes are 800 vertical feet and we use two of them for each training block making the lanes 1600 vertical feet, top to bottom (we are the only camp to do this), we find it to be well worth the extra expense to make a better training environment for the athlete. Our designated lane training days are Sunday through Friday. The training areas we use are private to us and we have our own high speed quad that services our training arena. Each group will train two sessions per day and each session is 2 ? hours long. There is one group per training arena. This provides us with more one on one training and also the ability to set the progression we desire. Some of the ski groups will have the opportunity to train at Loveland. We have three days blocked; it is a great experience for the athlete.
Training Block Timelines Our training time blocks on hill are: 7:00 - 9:00, 9:00 - 11:30, 11:30 - 2:00 and 2:00 - 3:30. Obviously, every groups does have their own timeline, for example, Team Canada may train from 7:00 - 9:00 and then from 11:30 - 2:00
Recovery Period Everyday we have a recovery time which is determined by each group's schedule; typically it is from 3:00 - 5:30. Recovery can be anything from just resting, doing yoga, spinning, stretching, swimming, etc.
Video We have dedicated videographers on our coaching staff. They are in charge of shooting all video. Replay is done one on one between the athlete and coach throughout the day and evening, we even have added Facebook/YouTube for video view. This way, parents will be able to watch video daily back at home.
Meals Meals are a very important part of the camp. Copper Mountain provides a beautiful breakfast buffet each morning. Our camp brings in two chefs to prepare lunch and dinners (with the assistance of parent volunteers). A full Thanksgiving dinner is provided. Special dietary needs can be accommodated; there is a space on the application for you to note that information.
Fun The groups do travel off campus to either Breckenridge, or Vail for shopping. Typically, we offer a movie night on Thanksgiving evening. The ski groups will make the decisions on their own, what activities they would like to do.
Housing All of the condos we live in are in the Center Village of Copper Mountain, walking distance to the lift. The condos have two - three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and three bathrooms. A coach will stay in each condo with the athletes to provide supervision. Each condo is gated and has outside surveillance. The athlete curfew / lights out is at 10:00 every night. Roommates are chosen via age, sex and also roommate requests on the application.
Medical Center There is a fully staffed medical center right next door to our building. Your camp application has a medical release form for you to sign and the acknowledgement letter has a form for your insurance information - both things are needed at the med. center.
Camp Departure All ground transportation is handled by our coaching staff. Please make sure your mail your flight information back to us by the due date, so that airport pick ups and drop offs can be scheduled prior of camp. This is very important for our scheduling purposes.
